The Pilano Cave: a prehistoric treasure in the heart of the Murgia

Located on the slopes of Mount Pilano, the Pilano Cave is an archaeological site of great interest, officially discovered in 1952, but known since the 18th century. This cave is a veritable treasure trove for prehistory scholars, who have uncovered a rich cache of archaeological finds within.

The cave opens with a wide and deep shelter, 5 meters high, leading to a narrow passage. From here, three internal caverns can be accessed, with many lateral branches. The cave complex has been studied by a team of experts, who have classified the finds.

Among the most significant finds are bone fragments from animals extinct in the Murgia area, such as deer and ox, which testify to the rich and varied fauna of the area. Furthermore, fragments of Paleolithic bone industry were found, such as flints, awls, chisels, smoothing tools, spearheads, and knives, demonstrating the skill and ingenuity of the area's ancient inhabitants. Some of these are now preserved at the MARTA in Taranto.

The blackish ceramic fragments found in the cave are further evidence of human presence in the area, and have been studied by experts.

The Pilano Cave is a site of great importance for understanding the prehistory of the Murgia, and continues to be the object of study and research by scholars.

It is possible to visit the Pilano cave with expert speleological guides.
